DTF (Direct to Film) printing

DTF (Direct to Film) printing is a digital printing technique used to transfer designs onto a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blended materials, and more. It is a relatively new technology that has gained popularity due to its versatility and print quality. Here’s how it works and what its main features are:
How does DTF printing work?

Design: As with other printing processes, you start by creating a digital design using graphics software.

Film printing: The design is printed onto a special PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film using a printer that uses DTF inks. These inks are similar to those used in direct-to-garment (DTG) digital printing and typically include CMYK plus white colors for the base.

Application of adhesive powder: Once the design is printed, it is covered with a special adhesive powder that adheres to the areas where the ink is. This powder is what allows the design to be transferred to the fabric.

Curing: The film with the adhesive powder is heated slightly to melt the powder, creating an adhesive layer that will facilitate transfer.

Transfer: The film is placed on the fabric and pressed with a heat press. The heat activates the adhesive and allows the ink to transfer from the film to the fabric.

Film Removal: Once cooled, the film is removed, leaving the printed design on the garment. The print is left soft and flexible.

Advantages of DTF printing:

Material versatility: Unlike sublimation, DTF can be applied to a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blends, and more, regardless of the color of the material.

Durability: DTF prints are long-lasting and hold up well to washing, maintaining their integrity and color.

Print Quality: Produces high-quality images with vibrant colors and sharp details.

Design Flexibility: Complex designs, including gradients and small details, can be printed without problems.

Limitations:

Initial cost: The initial investment in the specific machinery and materials for DTF can be high.

Additional process: The use of adhesive powder and curing can make the process a little more laborious compared to other techniques.

Texture: Although DTF printing is flexible, it can feel more to the touch compared to other techniques such as sublimation.

Comparison with other techniques:

Sublimation: Sublimation is ideal for polyester garments and produces prints that are fully integrated with the fabric, while DTF is more versatile in terms of materials.
DTG (Direct to Garment): DTG prints directly onto the fabric without the film step, but DTF allows printing on a wider range of materials and colors.

In short, DTF printing is an excellent option for those looking for versatility in fabric types and colors, as well as high quality in printing detailed and long-lasting designs.
